Vice-President Bush Invited To Open Olympics at Harvard

Vice President George Bush has been invited to represent the United States at the opening ceremonies for the Olympic soccer competition at Harvard Stadium next month. Although Olympic officials are expecting him to attend. Bush's office said recently he had not yet decided whether to accept the invitation.

The only obstacle to Bush's attending the July 29 ceremony appears to be insuring his safety, Olympic officials said.

"If we can work out security details with Bush's Secret Service office then he will be attending," said a spokesman for the office coordinating the soccer tournament.

A spokesman for Bush's office said a decision would be made next week as to whether he will attend.

The rest of the opening ceremony, which will include thousands of birds and balloons, has been completely planned, said David V. Facey, a community relations official for the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee (LAOOC).

The LAOOC has bought 1000 pigeons to release during the ceremony but they are still "trying to figure out how to do it without them flying over the spectators,"--with possibly unpleasant side effects--said Facey. In addition to the birds. 5000 balloons will also be released.

The Olympic flame, which was carried through the Boston area in May, has been stored in a miner's lamp on Beacon Hill. For the start of the Games a relay of former Olympians from the Boston area will carry-it to the Stadium for the torch lighting during the opening ceremonies.

Harvard men's hockey Coach Bill Cleary and his brother Bob, both former Harvard and Olympic hockey stars will participate in the relay, said Facey.

A few tickets for the soccer games and the opening ceremonies are still available at the Sears store in Porter Square, according to a store spokesman.
