No Longer Acting, O'Neill Becomes Associate V.P.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University yesterday made de jure what had been dr facto for the last nine months by appointing Jacqueline O'Neill to the post of associate vice president for state and community affairs.

O'Neill had served in an acting capacity in the position, which oversees Harvard's state and local relations, since last summer, when James King resigned to become senior vice president at Northeastern University.

The appointment comes several months after President Bok passed over O'Neill for a full vice presidency in the Government and Community Affairs office in favor of American Civil Liberties Union official John Shattuck. She will work directly under Shattuck along with Michael Blumenfeld, associate vice president for public affairs.

O'Neill said yesterday that she would continue the current University effort in state and local lobbying, but wanted to expand the scope of the work.

"Even if things do not effect us directly. Harvard can use its resources to help the state and the community," she added.

O'Neill came to Harvard nine years ago as assistant to the vice president for government and community affairs, becoming director of community affairs six years later.
