MIDFORD Bases loaded, nobody not and Crimson Coach Alex Nahigian walks to the mound His decision is obvious, go with the experience
So in walks freshman righthander George Sorbara, and out goes the fire.
All right so maybe it's a bit early in the year to be calling a freshman experienced but five games into the Harvard baseball season. Nahigian and Sorbara have already played out the above scenario twice
Saturday it was the bottom of the third, and the Crimson was clinging to a 4-3 lead Sorbara came in, threw strike, got some defensive help and escaped the inning after allowing just one of the runners to score. The 6-ft.. 1-in Naples, Fla. native pitched five scoreless innings for the win as Harvard downed defending Greater Boston League champion Tuffs 7-6.
While some Crimson hurlers have experienced control problems this year Sorbara has been able to choose his spots "I'm able to place the hall," he said after Saturday's game. "I can throw strikes
During his five innings of work. Tuffs only hit the ball out of the infield four times.
Harvard hit the ball out of the outfield twice, with a Mickey Maspons three run shot to left in the first and a Tony DiCesare two run smash down the left field foul line in the seventh
Tufts converted two walks and a Doug Sutton wild pitch into two first inning runs to cut Harvard's edge to 3-2 DiCesare opened the Crimson second with a walk, then moved to third on Bruce Weller's two-out bloop single. Brobby Kay scored DiCesare on hit to left
Designated hitter Dan Farren smashed a leadoff homer in the bottom half of the inning to bring the margin back to one Farren was up when Sorbara came in with the back loaded in the third, and he picked up another rbi with a single to right
Sophomore Paul Vallone threw in to cutoff man Elliott Rivera, who saw Jumbo John Andon heading for third base, where teammate Tom Snarsky was standing Rivera ran over and tagged Andon, then threw to second to get Farren, who thought he could catch Harvard sleeping. Shortstop DiCesare, fearing that the throw was headed for center field, knocked the ball down Second baseman Gaylord Lyman, who would have caught RivGaylord Lyman, who would have caught Rivera's throw, saw Snarsky head towards home picked up the ball and gunned it to catcher Maspons, who tagged Snarsky to complete to double play.
Harvard broke the tie in the top of the fourth Weller and Kay drew one-out walks, and Jim DePalo hit a double-play ball to third Kay took out the second baseman with what looked like a high slide. Base umpire Paul White thought otherwise, and despite Tuffs arguments refused to call a double play. Rivera's single to left scored Weller and gave Harvard a lead it never relinquished.
The Crimson widened the gap in the seventh when Maspons reached on an error and DiCesare sent the bail just right of the left field foul pole
However, reliever Chris Marchok got some had breaks but managed to save the game anyway. Two bloop singles, a wild pitch, a fielding error and a hit batsman were enough for Tufts to get, two runs in two innings. With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. Marchok got leadoff man John Guisti on a sacrifice fly to center and Steve Centrella on a grounder to Rivera
Harvard is now 5-0 overall. 2-0 in the Greater Boston League, Tufts is 0-1.
THE NOTEBOOK: The Crimson's undefeated record will be severely tested with two doubleheaders in two days, beginning tomorrow against the University of Massachusett and followed Wednesday with a pair against Northeastern.
