Salary Cap
NEW YORK--Major league baseball club owners asked the players' union to accept a salary cap similar to the one in the National Basketball Association "to slow the dramatic increase in salaries."
Lee MacPhail. president of the owners'. Players Relations Committee, said the payroll plan would not affect current salaries but would affect current signings.
Among eight other points put forth was one that would abolish the free agent draft and permit free agents to negotiate with all clubs, a proposal to eliminate professional player compensation to teams losing high-ranking free agents. An increase in the minimum salary by 50 percent to $60,000 from the present $40,000 was also suggested.
Elsewhere in baseball, infielder Darrell Evans of the Detroit Tigers, who hit four home runs and drove in 11 runs last week while hitting .414, was named the American League's Player of the Week.
In the National League, outfielder Dave Parker of the Cincinnati Reds received that league's honors for the second time in three weeks. Parker hit .462 with three home runs.
Stanley Cup
PHILADELPHIA--After a four day wait during which the Edmonton Oilers and the Philadelphia Flyers revitalized themselves for the big push, their Stanley Cup final series began Tuesday night.
The Oilers, hoping to repeat as National Hockey League champions, were looking to put their powerful offense into gear from the outset of the best-of-seven series. The Flyers, with only one player with previous experience in the championship round, wanted to keep it tight.
Even though they are known for their record-setting offense, the Oilers are a disciplined team. They proved that last year when they ended the New York Islanders' four-year championship reign.
The Flyers don't want things to become wide open in the finals. They will prosper only if they can negate the Oilers' scoring edge with a defensive blanket.
