Back when they were 2-2, none of the members of the Harvard women's softball team could have guessed what happened yesterday.
The batwomen swept a doubleheader yesterday at Soldiers. Field, defeating Stonehill College in both ends of a twinbill by identical 4-3 scores. The sweep gave the Crimson a 9-2 slate and a team-record seven-game winning streak.
"I feel pretty good," Harvard Coach John Wentzell said "I couldn't be happier with what we've accomplished."
The pair of 4-3 victories marked the fifth and sixth times the batwomen have won games by one run and the eight-inning opening contest upped the Crimson's extra-inning record to 3-0. "It shows a lot of heart on the part of the team, but it gives the coaching staff a lot of grey hairs," Wentzell said.
The Chieftains started things off early in the first game when they score a pair of one-out, first-inning runs. Stonehill added a third run in the fifth on three two-out singles.
The Crimson batwomen, who didn't get as much as a single until their half of the fifth, turned their first base hits into a quick run.
Harvard got two more in the sixth. After freshman catcher Gia Barresi lined out, third sacker Lisa Rowning singled and Trisha Brown doubled. With the table set, Ann Wilson, the Crimson's leading hitter last season, singled to score Rowning and when center fielder Karen Sullivan failed to field the bull cleanly, Brown crossed the plate to tie the game at three.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the but-women, as usual, came through in the bottom of the eighth.
Barresi led off with a single and Lisa Rowning reached when Stonehill first baseman Nancy Sullivan mishandled her bunt. Brown walked and Wilson finished things off by knocking Barresi home.
As in the first game, the Chieftains drew the initial blood in the nightcap, scoring once in the top of the first. But the Crimson retaliated with a Rowning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to tie the contest.
The batwomen picked up another run with two down in the third after Brown singled home Barresi.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, two Chieftain hitters reached on an error and a single. Karen Sullivan brought the first home with a base hit and Helen Calaldo converted the second with another RBI angle. On the next play, rightfielder Wilson saved a run when she threw a strike to Barresi after another Stonehill single and nabbed Sullivan at the plate.
For the second time in the afternoon, the batwomen refused to be counted out, rallying for a pair of runs in the fifth. Nancy Andrea drew a lead-off walk and Barresi got her third hit of the day, singling up the middle. Rowning bunted the runners over, and Brown, who knocked in three runs in the second game, got her last two ribbies whe she singled home Andrea and Barresi.
Pitcher Janet Dickerman, who upped her record to 4-0, gave up only one hit in the remaining two innings.
