Laxwomen: Grounded And Waiting

The Harvard women's lacrosse squad is on a two-game winning streak. It's been there for quite some time. And it might just be there for quite some time to come.

Win number two of the still young season came waaaaaaay back on March 24, when the Crimson copped a mighty big 6-4 victory over Penn in Philadelphia. That victory raised Harvard's record to 2-1.

But freezing rains and snow-covered fields then combined to keep it that way, causing cancellation of two crucial early-season showdowns over spring break.

With the Harvard playing fields still under water and the Crimson set to try again. Tuesday (this time again Boston College), it's a safe bet that 2-1 could be the laxwomen's mark for several days to come.

Frustration

For a squad that spent virtually all of its preseason unable to practice outdoors, the possibility of having to spend at least a few more days inside is "just frustrating," Captain Maggie Hart says.

The young and inexperienced Crimson squad surprised more than a few people with its surprisingly easy win at Penn, and appeared to be emerging as a legitimate power.

But spring's surprise put those plans on hold.

"It's frustrating especially since we were playing so well," Hart said.

It's doubtful the laxwomen will make up their game with Temple, which was cancelled when freezing rains in Philadelphia made Cambridge a nice place to spend spring break.

Until, of course, the blizzard made Cambridge a disaster and forced cancellation of Saturday's Ivy showdown with Princeton. Yet, the showdown with the Tigers will most likely be made up later this season, especially if it has a bearing on the race for the Ivy title.

For now, though, the Crimson will have to be content with its 1-0 league record, that of two game winning streak THE NOTEBOOK. Hart led the Crimson attack at Penn, scoring three goals. Claire Farley added two and Blair Wardenburg netted the final goal... Senior defender Sarah Sewall severely twisted her ankle at the start of the second half against Penn Genie Simmons will replace her... That injury was the only cloud in a superb performance from the Harvard defense... Game time Tuesday is 3 p.m.... The Crimson thumped Ursinus in a scrimmage early last week.
