Womack Responds To Republican Club

To the Editors of the Crimson:

On March 3, in Science Center C, where I had been asked to speak to Harvard-Radcliffe Parents of the Class of '85, someone distributed before the lecture a flyer that bore a note at the end--"App'd Harvard Republican Club." The author or authors of the flyer expressed opposition to a "virtual monopoly of political thought and discussion...achieved by the left wing of the students and faculty" at Harvard. There is no point in my taking the time or your space to consider this fantasy in all its aspects. But I do want to correct in public one libelous error about me.

The author or authors of the flyer state, "Mr. Womack organized and led a student demonstration against American intervention in Grenada... Grenada... "I did not I think that it is conduct unbecoming to a member of the faculty to organize and lead student demonstrations, and I have never done such a thing. I do not know who organized the demonstration against the U.S. invasion of Granada. I was invited by students from the Law School to be one of the speakers at the demonstration, and I did speak. That is all.

If the "Harvard Republican Club" intends to make more statements about the "monopoly" its members see, it should avoid false accusations about persons. John Womack, Jr. '59
