Council Elects Student Reps To Four Faculty Committees

By Rebecca K. Kramnick

In its first regular Sunday night meeting of the year, the Undergraduate Council last night elected seven students to the four Faculty standing committees.

Twenty-five candidates, net limited to members of the council, ran for the student slots on the permanent committee the Advisory Committee on Shareholder Responsibilities (ACSR), Athletics, Advising and Counselling, and Library.

Ethan H. Cohen '86, a council representative from Quincy House, was elected student representative to the ACSR, Picked for the Committee on Advising and Counseling were: Erica S. Eisenberg '86, a council representative from Lowell House, Lori E. Lesser '88 and Deborah Schrag '86.

Adam J. Augustinski '86, another Lowell House council representative, will serve on the Athletics Committee. And R. Scott Falk '85 and Preston W. Brooks '86 were elected to the Library Committee.

Cohen says his top priority as a member of the ACSR, which advises the Corporation on ethical issues related to its ownership of stock, will be to continue to pressure the University to divest its holdings in companies that do business in South Africa.

"I feel that the apartheid in South Africa is unethical. But while I am a strong personal supporter of divestiture, I realize that the administration holds a different view and I will be realistic in my fight for it," Cohen stated.

Last year the ACSR 6-5-1 to recommend that the University divest its South African stock. This full President Bok released an open letter detailing his objection to the ACSR's proposal.

Cohen says the ACSR's first duty this year should be to respond to Bok's letter. Then, he says, the ACSR should continue to work on pressuring the Corporation to divest.

All three student elected to the Committee on Advising and Counseling stressed a concern with upgrading the quality of freshman advising.

Lesser said that it is not enough to have "passive help that is there waiting for students. Instead there should be help that reaches out and grabs you."

The committee is comprised of the directors of the Mental Health Services at UHS and the Bureau of Study Counsel, as well as senior faculty members and students.

Augustynski says his main concern as a member of the Athletics committee will be to gain wider student access to University athletic facilities. Among his priorities are expanding the intramural programs and increasing the number of sports classes offered at the IAB.

Falk, who will serve on the Library committee for a second year, says he will continue to support the proposal for a 24-hour library.

In other business this week, the council's regular committees chose their chairmen: Brian C. Offutt '87 of the Academics Committee, Kyung B. Lee '86 and Kenneth Shen '86 of Finance, Jessica E. Levin '87 of Residential, W. Stephen Waters '85 of Social, and Gina R. Levy '87 of Student Services.
