Vignali Dampens Dartmouth Antics

Tailback Racks Up 175 Yards

By Nick Wurf, Special to The Crimson

Tailback Mark Vignali's 22 carry, 175-yard performance was tied for the sixth best single-game effort ever by a Harvard rusher.

Not bad for a player who was unable to practice all week with a Leg injury.

The 5-ft., 11-in., 185-lb. senior from Uniontown, Penn. also shattered the mark for Harvard rushing yards against Dartmouth, surpassing the record of Bobby Leo who in 1966 garnered 173 yards on 20 carries.

The huge Dartmouth homecoming crowd was up to its usual Harvard game anties.

At the end of the first half, the Big Green freshman cuss, all clad in identical green football jerseys with the number field.

The freshmen joined hands in four big circles, feeble attempting to spell out'88".

After displaying a large Dartmouth banner, the eager frosh attempted to maul the Harvard Band but were restrained by security personnel. Several vain attempts to build up enough momentum to overwhelm the guards failed, and the Dartmouth class of '88 contented itself with some derisive jeers and returned to its seats.

Also playing hurt was Dartmouth Co-Captain Don Pomeroy.

The defensive back appeared at last night's pep rally here on crutches but still managed to take the field today.

The other Dartmouth captain, Rich Weissman, was out of uniform today. The senior tailback, who was expected to lead the Big Green rushing attack this year, was injured against Holy Cross two weeks ago and hasn't been able to play since.

In Weissman's absence, substitute tailback Lorenzo Chambers had 101 yards rushing on 20 carries.
