The Princeton University Board of Trustees abruptly ended a year-long controversy two weeks ago by voting to deny university recognition to fraternities and sororities on campus.
The national social organizations had been slowly expanding at Princeton for several years, without the university's bucking, and had hoped that increasing student acceptance would convince the university to give them status as official student organizations.
But in announcing the decision Princeton president James Bower said that "fraternities and sororities are not just another student organization but have social objectives which can have profound effective [campus] social life."
The board's decision on fraternities came on the heels of a campus wide referendum vote against recognition for fraternities and sororities, 1193-728. The Daily Princetonian
