After protests, reports, and inquiries, the University California at Berkeley withdrew its sponsorship two weeks ago from Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

The fraternity had been charged with the gang beating of four Chicanos on January 8 of this year.

A report based on independent investigations by the U.C. Police Department and the U.C. Office of Student Affairs supported the Chicanos' claims that fraternity members "engaged in excessive physical violence" during the incident. The report said a preliminary investigation "revealed a pattern of unacceptable conduct over the past several years."

"This is the most significant disciplinary action we've taken with a fraternity in the last 20 years," said Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Affairs Bud Travers. The Daily Californian
