Relations between Barnard and Columbia are becoming more and more intimate. After six months of negotiations, officials at both colleges announced on February 28 that they will form an athletic consortium beginning in September.

Women from both Columbia and Barnard will be eligible to play on the same athletic teams and will compete under the Columbia name although the teams will be known to the National Colle rate Athletic Association officially as Columbia Barnard.

According to the terms of the agreement the Barnard Bears will go out of existence and Barnard will lead to a superior women's athletic program for both schools.

Barnard coaches and athletes said they believe the consortium between Columbia and Barnard will lead to a superior women's athletic program for both schools.
