Although the Administrative Board's business is usually considered strictly confidential, there's already been an unusual amount of discussion about one of the items slated for the Ad Board's agenda today: a request by the Undergraduate Council for an open, "mock" meeting of the College's 92-year-old disciplinary body.
Natasha Pearl '83, one of the council members behind the request, said this week that an open meeting would be just one part of an effort to make the board's operations clearer to all students, and not just to those who may be wondering how their specific cases have been handled.
But Dean of the College John B. Fox Jr. '59, who chairs the body's weekly meetings, said yesterday that simulating the Ad Board's deliberative procedures may be less helpful than some students believe. He explained that even with well-conceived mock cases, it would be difficult to approximate the reality of the Board in two or three hours since the meetings typically run five or six hours.
Pearl also acknowledged potential problems, citing some opposite's to the event from a member of Senior team, who comprise the approximately 35-members Board along with a variety of Faculty members and administrations. But, she adds. "There are things about the Board that I think students should know more about."
Fox said that a mock Ad Board session held several years ago was poorly attended, but Pearl said the council would publicize the proposed event.
