Huskies Edge Terriers, 4-3; N.U. to Meet B.C. for Beanpot

Boston University went into the game with a better record. With a period and a half gone the Terriers had a 3-0 lead. No wonder they ended up losing--this was the Beanpot and a B.U. victory was looking too obvious.

Last night at the Boston Garden. Northeastern scored four unanswered goals in the last 30 minutes to earn the right to face Boston College in next Monday night's 9 p.m. finale. Last year's champions, the Terriers, will have to settle for a consolation match with Harvard three hours earlier.

Surf's Up

It was a two-minute holding penalty on B.U. center Dan Carnevale at 10:56 in the second stanza that marked the change in the tides of the contest. Although the Huntington Hounds did not actually score on the power play, just three seconds after the Terriers returned to full strength Husky Paul Fitzsimmons dished the puck to teammate Jim Madigan part of a crowd in front of the B.U. net. Madigan beat Terrier netminder Cleon Daskalakis with the blast to the lower lefthand corner to put Northeastern on the scoreboard.

Harvard vs. Boston University, Consolation Game, 6:15 p.m.

Boston College vs. Northeastern, Championship Game, 9 p.m.

After that tally, the Huskies really came to life. The Northeastern blueliners Jim Averill, Craig Frank, and Brad Cowie, began checking with the same enthusiasm they showed two weeks ago when they shellacked the Terriers 5-2. Northeastern netminder Mark Davidner also began playing better, turning away a number of very tough B.U. blasts in the warning minutes of play.

Bronzed Gods

Meanwhile, the Husky offense went to work. After mustering only one shot on net the first period, they managed to keep Daskalakis busy with 16 in the second stanza, most of the shots coming in the last 10 minutes after its first tally. The B.U. netminder had gone behind the goal to clear the puck out of the zone, but as he bungled it, Husky freshman Stewart Emerson alertly sent the puck to Averill who was open about 15 feet up in the slot. Before Daskalakis had time to get back into position, the red light was on and the score was 3-2.

Now You See It

At 3:12 in the last stanza center Randy Bucyk scored a shorthand goal to tie the game. And then at 13:13, Husky center Greg Neary sent a slow dribbler towards the left-hand corner of the Terrier twines. In one of his less than brilliant moments, Daskalakis tried to cover the shot, and as he wrestled with it, the puck slid under his arm and into the net to give N.U. a lead it never relinquished.
