The Harvard women's swimming team upped its record to 3-1 Saturday afternoon with a dual-meet victory over Maine and Boston College at Blodgett Pool.
The Crimson had little trouble with either opponent. In the words of senior Co-Captain Anita Rival, "We pretty much dominated the meet."
Harvard sophomore Marie Ciepiella took first place in the 200-yd. individual medley with a time of 2:16:1, while junior Julie Mihalich dominated the 200-yd butterfly with a time of 2:14:0
A good recruiting year has brought a strong group of freshman to the squad, and their influence was certainly evident against Maine and B. C.
Frosh Molly Clark, Michelle Engh and Lisa Schauwecker all turned in excellent performances. Engh and Clark taking first and second in the 200-yd. freestyle and Schauwecker placing first in the 100-yd. Freestyle.
The day's best performance, however, came from sophomore Elaine Sang, who captured both 100 yd. and 200 yd. backstroke events.
Her time of 1:00:0 in the 100 yd was her lifetime best and could beat the qualifying time for the Eastern Championships, which has yet to be announced.
Sang's finishes won her the coaches' award for the team best performance of the day.
The victory allows the Crimson aquawomen to go into Wednesday's meet at Brown on an up note.
The Bruins, who are the best squad in the Ivy League right now, have easily defeated Harvard for the last couple of years, but senior Co-Captain Cary Mazzone thinks this year's team could put an end to Brown's domination.
"They're probably number one in the Ivies but we've been swimming pretty well lately," said Mazzone. "We should put up a good fight."
