The drinking age was originally lowered from 21 to 18 in a 1972 referendums. After Dukakis had twice voted attempts to raise the age to 20, former Gov. Edward J. King approved the two year talks in 1979.

Dukakis said earlier this month that while he did not support the age hike, he would not veto it, because "there is considerable public sentiment to raise it."
