The Harvard football team didn't get a lot of help Saturday in its quest to get back into the Ivy race. Dartmouth and Penn both walked away with easy victories. In non-league action, Holy Cross trampled Brown and Bucknell tied Columbia.
Dartmouth 31, Cornell 17
The Big Green stopped the Big Red in the third period and pulled away from a 10-10 halftime tie to remain the only unbeaten and untied team in the Ivies.
Cornell tailback Derrick Harmon raced for 101 first-half yards as the Ithicans threatened to grab their first victory of the year, but Harmon gained only six third quarter yards as his learn failed to make a first down in the third quarter at Hanover, N.H.
Dartmouth split end Jack Daly hauled in 10 catches for 161 yards, giving him 1961 career yards, enough to break Dave Shula's school record Quarterback Frank Polisinello connected with Daly for 44 yards on the key play of the Big Green's 74-yard go-ahead touchdown drive.
Dartmouth is now 3-0 in the Ivies, 3-3 overall Cornell is 0-3-1 in the league, 0-5-1 overall.
Penn 17, Yale 0
Reserve quarterback Jim Crocicchia tossed a 48-yard bomb to give the Quakers a second-half security touchdown and lead his some-what sluggish forces past the still-winless Elis at New Haven, Conn.
Penn scored on its first possession when tailback Stan Koss ran two yards to the end zone. There was no other scoring in the first half.
Crochiccia gave Penn its final 10 points on consecutive third-quarter drives. The first, a 57-yard, three-play affair, put the game out of reach of the lethargic Bulldogs.
Penn is now 3-0-1 in the Ivies, 4-1-1 overall Yale is 0-3 in the league, 0-6 overall.
Holy Cross 31, Brown 10
The Crusaders easily won this battle between Harvard's next two opponents, as backup quarterback from Heffeman led Holy Cross to two forth-quarter touchdowns that blew open what had been a close game.
The Crusaders led just 17-10 early in the forth quarter of the game at Worcester.
Brown held a 3-0 lead until midway through the second period when Holy Cross erupted for 17 points. The last seven of those points were set up by a 34-yard pass interference penalty in the end zone, a penalty Brown protested vehemently. A one-yard plunger made it 17-3 with 48 seconds left in the half.
Holy Cross is 7-0. Brown is still 2-1-1 in the Ivies, tied with Harvard for third place. The Bruins are 2-3-1 overall.
Bucknell 31, Columbia 31
Al Yuknus booted a 42-yard field goal with 35 seconds left to lift Bucknell to a tie at Hempstead, N.Y.
Columbia's Larry Walsh missed a 36-yard field goal attempt on the last play of the game. Walsh had kicked a 25-yarder with 1:45 to give the Lions a 31-28 lead.
Columbia quarterback John Witkowski completed 21 of 37 passes for 423 yards and three touchdowns including a 93-yarder to Mark Milam, the longest scoring pass in Columbia history.
Columbia is now 1-3-0 in the Ivies, 1-4-1 overall Bucknell is 2-3-1.
