Quincy Phones

Short Takes

Telephones will begin working today in the last 25 rooms in Quincy House without service this fall. Paul Conway, manager of the phone service center, said yesterday.

Work began yesterday on wiring in A and Centry, Conway said, adding that workmen stayed throughout the night to provide temporary service for seven of the 25 rooms.

Conway attributed the delay to problems with four conduits, which had been bent out of shape, preventing the placement of telephone wires. Conduits are hollow pipes through which the wiring is run.

Facilities Manager Robert E. Lyng said yesterday that the source of trouble may be settlement in the building's foundation, which, he explained would lower the floor almost one-half inch and disrupt supporting beams and underground conduits.

"Such an occurrence is not unusual in a building the age of Quincy House." Lyng explained.

New England Telephone will begin major repairs during winter break, when workers will tear up floors to install new wiring. Lyng said, adding that a structural engineer will then inspect the work.

"Top priority is being given to providing service for Quincy House," said Conway. "We will be working all day [today] no matter what the weather is. Hopefully, all rooms will be completed by then."
