Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
Arthur L. Loeb, senior lecturer on Visual and Environmental Studies (VES), will become acting master of Dudley House for this year, pending Corporation approval, Dean of the College John B Fox Jr. '59 said yesterday.
Loeb and his wife, Charlotte, will assume the post vacated by Charles P. and Patricia H. Whitlock when they resigned in June.
The abrupt departure of the Whitlocks prevented the search for a full-time master--usally conducted by top University officials with advice from students and faculty--which often takes several months.
In addition to acting as master of Harvard's House for commuters, Loeb will continue to serve as head tutor of the VES Department. He began teaching at Harvard full-time in 1973 and has been affiliated with Dudely House since then.

A native of Holland, as is his wife, Loeb said this week that "the first order of business is to show that Dudley is a viable House."
Though Dudley's commuter population makes it more decentralized than the other Houses, Loeb said he hopes to bolster its musical and other cultural offerings, using Dudley House's Lehman Hall building "intensively."
