Batsmen Slip By UConn, 5-4

Brad Bauer had three hits and two rbi's and made the game saving game ending throw to the plate in the top of the ninth and Dennie Allard crunched a homer and a double to drive in two runs, to lead the Harvard baseball team past a scrappy University of Connecticut squad 5-4 yesterday at Soldiers Field.

Fireballer Mike Smerczynski, in relief of starter Jim Curtain, threw three scoreless innings to pick up the win for Harvard evening his record at 1-1 on the year. The victors put the Crimson back to within one game of 500(12-13), while UConn dropped to 8-22.

For although Harvard battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tic the be the game at three in the bottom of the sixth and then went ahead with two more uns in the seventh, the Crimson needed a Paul Scheper to Brad Bauer to Vinnie Martell game ending out at the plate before the Huskies were sent packing their hall bags.

With runners at first and second. Doyle fanned left fielder Paul Tinkham, but, just one out from victory, center fielder Shawn Granger ripped a 2-1 pitch into the gap in left center.

As Crimson left elder Paul Scheper chased the ball down. Rossi scored standing up Scheper whipped the ball into Bauer in good time, but the UConn third base coach sent Crowley around anyway, and Bauer whirled and gunned the ball to the plate Catcher Martelli took the throw on a line and slapped the tag on a diving Crowley to end the game.

UConn had gotten things going early against Curtin, stringing together three singles for a run in the first, and a walk and a double for single tally in the third inning. In between. Allard smashed his eighth homer of the year and his sixth in the last eight games deep over the fence in left center.

"I feel great" the big right fielder said after the game, "as good as I've ever felt at the plate since I've been in college." Because of Harvard's multiple doubleheader schedule. Allard's last six homers have all come on five of the last six playing dates.

Harvard took the lead for good in the seventh, when Bruce Weller doubled and scored on Bauer's single, and Martell at second after a fielder's choice and a stolen base--walked home on Allard's two base hit into the gap in right centerfield.
