Batswomen Cream Curry College, 13-5

Rally in Seventh to Clinch Win

By Neal Shultz

Suffering from post-Ivy League tournament doldrums, the Harvard softball team played sluggish ball against a weaker Curry College Squad for six innings but finally blew the game open. 13-5, with a seven run explosion in the seventh inning.

The Crimson should have had no trouble against Curry, which did its best to give the game away by committing a series of baserunning errors in addition. Harvard batters faced hurlers whose offerings appeared snail-like in comparison to those of the Ivy pitchers the Crimson encountered last week.

Liquid Balls

Still, the same players who scored 30 runs against Yale crossed the plate only five times in the first six innings in yesterday's contest "Our bats just weren't getting anything solid today," said first baseman Landya Boyer whose booming triple in the seventh belied her statement.

After a grueling tournament that saw them play six games in two days, the batswomen's poor start was understandable. "Everyone was kind of down," third baseman Pat Horne said.

Moreover the rain that cancelled Harvard's mid-week game against Massasoit also presented the team from practicing until Thursday, leaving it only one day to prepare for Curry.

Flashes of the Crimson's normal level of play did pop up from time to time. With one out in the fourth and the bases loaded, Harvard left-fielder Inga Larson made a remarkable running catch The freshman then alertly threw to second, doubling up a Curry runner to end the inning and preserve the Crimson's 5-3 edge.

"Normally on a play like that you automatically throw to home." Horne said, "but Inga played heads up ball and got us out of a jam."

In the seventh inning, the softballers finally hit their stride Harvard battled around, and when the dust had cleared, the Crimson had turned a 6-5 cliffhanger into a 13.5 laugher.

THE NOTEBOOK Romero went the distance, winning her third game despite constant pain from stretched ligaments in her knee Curry's shoddy playing field only aggravated her condition. "There wasn't a pitching mound--just a piece of rubber on some dirt," she said. Harvard lifted its record to 8-6 and will probably improve that against Massasoit today....Horne led the batswomen with a three hit outing, including a two-run triple during the Crimson's seventh inning rally.
