Seniors Select Student Orators For Class Day

By Jessica Marshall

Michael R. Mills '82, Elizabeth D. Kalodner '82, and George Melrod '82 will deliver the traditional Class Day Orations this year, the selection committee of class marshalls and House representatives announced yesterday.

The committee also chose as the Class Ode an original verse written by John M. Balbus '82 and Paul R.Q. Wolfson '82. The verse, which will be added to "Fair Harvard," departs from the serious for the first time in Harvard's history. Natalia Martin '82, chairman of the selection committee, said yesterday.

Mills, who will give the Harvard Oration, said yesterday his speech will be a "plea for moral engagement" Citing a "preoccupation with their careers." Mills explained that he will be asking his fellow students to take more interest in others' well-being.

Melrod, who will present the traditionally humorous Ivy Oration, yesterday expressed his hope that the entire Class Day crowd enjoys his speech. "But," added Melrod, "if just one person in the entire audience smiles just a little bit, then my speech will have been a tremendous failure."

Mother Teresa, Nobel Peace Prize winner will be the main speaker on Class Day to be held June 9, the day before Commencement.
