Racquetwomen Beat Williams, Still Undefeated With 6-1 Win

Playing their first match in almost a month, the undefeated Harvard racquetwomen overcame some early sloppiness to down Williams, 6-1, at Hemenway Saturday.

Jackie Corrigan, playing at number two, came from behind to defeat Williams' Barbara Riefler, 3-1. Clearly rusty from the long break, Corrigan committed numerous errors en route to a 15-6 loss in the first game.

But the Crimson sophomore gradually regained her winning form, taking two close games. By the fourth game, she was in complete control as she closed the match with a 15-3 triumph.

"The vacation and reading period do hurt," Corrigan said after the match. "When you're studying all the time, you're really not thinking about squash," she added.

Crimson captain Ellie Cunningham didn't need to think much during her match, a five-game triumph characterized by both player's lack of finesse. After slugging it out with Roz Saregan for four games, Cunningham took the last four points of the fifth game to clinch a 15-13 win.

"Neither of us played a smart game," Cunningham said after the match.

While a power game worked for Cunningham, at number six it didn't help teammate Lisa Harrison in the first position. Except for a second-game lapse, Harrison played a strong, close match. But in each game, the tremendous intensity of Williams' Mary Tom Higgs prevailed as Higgs gained a 3-0 sweep.

The two Crimson freshmen, Laura Kaye and Lili Pew, continued their strong play with 3-0 sweeps at numbers three and five, respectively. Both remained undefeated for the season, as did senior Libby Pierpont, who won 3-1, in the fourth slot.

Senior Wendy Sonnabend, playing her first match of the season after returning from a knee injury, took an easy 3-0 win.
