J.V. Gridders Halted By Brown, 24-21

With players shuttling in and out on every series, the Harvard J.V. football squad kept onlookers confused in yesterday's 24-21 loss to Brown.

Unfortunately, the visiting Bruins had things figured out well enough by the final quarter to come from behind to eke out the three-point victory.

The Crimson offense looked good in the early going with quarterback Mark Marion directing the charges on a 70-yd. touchdown drive following the opening kickoff. Mike Granger and Scott McCabe rumbled for crucial first downs before McCabe went over for the score.

Brown came right back on the next series to notch a touchdown of its own, but the Bruins missed the extra point. Its lead trimmed to 7-6, the J.V. gridders came up with a big play late in the first quarter when Crimson linebacker Otto Rutt intercepted a stray pass in Brown territory.

A Joe Lahti to Wally Rutecki aerial moved the ball to the Bruin 16, and Mike Ernst trudged the remaining distance for the score.

Bruin quarterback Hand "The Arm" Landers led his teammates to another tally early in the second quarter to bring the visitors within two at 14-12.

An aggresive Harvard defense held Brown scoreless the remainder of the half with a Sam Soutter interception and a Lou Varsamis fumble recovery, nullifying any threats.

Another Harvard quarterback, Donny Allard, guided the Crimson to a touch-down in the third stanza after Bill Holley recovered a Brown fumble. But after that the Crimson offense couldn't get untracked.
