Report Says Rice Faculty Underpaid

By Compiled FROM College newspapers

HOUSTON--A faculty council report at Rice University two weeks ago declared that "it is a practical impossibility for an assistant professor to support a family on a Rice salary," and that "that the plight of associate professors at Rice is, if anything, even more grim."

The Rice student newspaper, The Rice Thresher, reported that in constant 1971 dollars, salaries have declined from $13,300 to $11,000 for assistant professors, $16,300 to $13,700 for associate professors, and $22,800 to $20,000 for full professors.

The Rice Thresher urged in an editorial that the administration raise tuition to pay for salary increase for junior faculty.
