Iowa Deals Shock to Syracuse In NCAA Regional Semi-Final

The unheralded Iowa Hawkeyes, aided by a technical foul and Vince Brookins' free-throw sharpshooting late in the game, upset Syracuse, 88-77, in the semifinals of the NCAA's East Regional basketball championships last night in Philadelphia.

The victory sends the Big Ten team into Sunday's East finals at the Spectrum against eleventh-ranked Georgetown, which defeated eighth-ranked Maryland, 74-68.

Iowa, which tied for fourth in the Big Ten during the regular season, turned the opening game around with a nine-point string with less than eight minutes to go.

The Hawkeyes were helped by a technical foul on Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, which turned into a five-point play and gave them the lead.

Second ranked Louisville's All-American guard Darrell Griffith made four free throws and a layup in overtime to pace the hard-pressed Cardinals to a 66-55 victory last night over Texas A&M in the NCAA midwest regionals in Houston, Texas.

The Cardinals will face Louisiana State, which defeated Missouri, 68-93, in the other semi-final.

Griffith, who had a game-high 24 points and started the game with a sensational slam dunk, missed a 15-footer in the final second that would have given the Cardinals a victory in regulation time.
