Bridgewater--The Harvard field hockey team ended its regular season on a dramatic note yesterday when forward Sue Field scored with only three ticks left on the clock to tie Bridgewater State, 1-1.
With five minutes left to play and the Bears leading 1-0, Crimson coach Edie MacAusland pulled a halfback from the game and added an extra forward in an attempt to generate more offense. For the next four and a half minutes it looked as if her move had been in vain. Then the stick-women finally started to click.
Forward Jennifer White started the last desperate rush by streaking past a Bridgewater defender and down the right sideline. When confronted by another Bear she slipped a pass inside to leading scorer Kate Martin. Martin then fed the ball across the circle to Field, who slammed it past onrushing goalie Nancy McCarrion.
Nobody enjoys ties, but there was no more appropriate way for this game to end. Harvard finished even with Bridgewater in shots, saves, corners, and time of possession as well as goals.
Life in the Fast Lane
Halfback Betsy Torg and link Ann Velie played strong games in leading the Crimson defense to within one brief lapse of a shutout.
That lapse came at 18:30 of the second half. Bridgewater brought the ball down into the circle, and suddenly eight players were stacked up in front of the Harvard goal. Somehow two shots made it out of the tangle, but goalie Juliett Lamont kicked them aside. Torg then made a fine defensive save on a third shot, but Bear forward Betty Croule got a stick on the rebound and tipped it into the cage.
Recalling the confusion in front of the net halfback Sara Leblond said: "It was just a mess. I couldn't even see the ball before it got in the goal."
The Crimson must try to avoid any similar lapses tomorrow when they travelto Springfield to take on the University of New Hampshire in the first round of the EAIAW tournament. The stickwomen proved they could play with the nationally-ranked Wildcats earlier this season when the two teams tied and are looking for an upset.
THE NOTEBOOK: LeBlond and Maureen Finn returned from injuries yesterday to bring the squad to full strength for the first time all year.
