Coca-Cola may have Mello Yello, but South House has the Orange Crush. The SoHo hordes controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the second game of yesterday's House football doubleheader, limiting Dunster-Mather to four first downs while rushing for more than five yards per carry on offense en route to a 12-0 victory over the Dunsters yesterday afternoon at Soldiers Field.
In the first game, Eliot House combined stringent defense and six Lowell fumbles to defeat the hapless Bell Boys, 18-0. Running behind an offensive line which looked down at their Mather counterparts, South House backs Rick Gallito and Carl Murillo powered for long gainer after long gainer.
In the second quarter, the duo took turns carrying up the middle to take the defending league champions to the Mather 32-yd line. Quarterback Joe Auteri did his part with a 14 yard scramble around right end. Two incompletions later. Auteri connected over the middle to Steve Braun on the five. After a loss of eleven, the Auteri-to-John Cheney connection struck again, this time for 16 yards and a 6-0 South House lead.
With the Orange "D" holding the Dunsters to 60 yards of total offense, that proved to be enough. But Gallito and Murillo kept coming, grinding 32 yards in 5 tries, with Gallito punching the ball over from the three.
Dunster/Mather threatened to ruin the South shutout on the game's last drive. Following a South personal foul, halfback Mark Rosen slanted off tackle 3 times for 19 yards, and QB Keith Dowds passed for 18 yards and scrambled twice for 15 more to take the Dunsters to the one as time expired. A late hit call gave the Dunsters another chance, but the Crush held.
Lowell's problems began on their first offensive play when center Bruce Lynn walked off the field with a dislocated
The Eliot defense pounced on the loose ball when QB Tony Hollenberg couldn't handle backup Rob Rifkin's snap. Three plays later a Jay Silverstein 37-yd. field goal gave Eliot a 3-0 lead.
The Eliot defense took over when Lowell took possession on their own eleven after the kickoff. Eliot linemen crashed into the backfield on three successive plays, and recorded Eliot's first safety of the season.
Late in the first half the teams traded turnovers, but Lowell proved more generous, fumbling the snap on their own six. Back Larry Lebowitz rambled into the endzone on the very next play, and Silverstein's conversion increased the score to 12-0.
Lowell finally executed an accurate punt snap, but Scott Johnson and Jim Whitling broke through the line and blocked the kick. Taking over on the Lowell twelve. Eliot scored in four plays with Rich Iorio going over from the two.
With yesterday's two shutouts, no losing team has scored a point in any of the six House league games this year.
