Water Polo Overwhelms B.U.; Roberts, Fasi Destroy Visitors

Call it a blowout, a humiliation, or a mismatch. Which ever you prefer, the Harvard varsity water polo team thoroughly dominated a hapless squad from Boston University last night at Blodgett Pool en route to a 30-7 victory.

In the Bag

Two freshmen exhibited particularly sparkling play, indicating that the aquamen have a bright future ahead of them. Speedster Courtney Roberts, described by coach Stephen Pike as having played "a really great game," led Harvard with a team-record eight goals, including a penalty shot and a half-court lob into an open net in the fourth quarter. Roberts also tallied four assists.

Not to be outdone, freshman David Fasi, the high school All-American from Hawaii, overwhelmed B.U. with six goals and ten assists. Fasi's accumulation of 16 points set another team record, and his shooting was a perfect six for six. A third freshman, Steven Munatones, contributed tow more goals.

Once Again

The Terriers never really had a chance. Rich Guerra began the onslaught by scoring four minutes into the game, and Fasi provided three more talllies--the last of which he backhanded past a bewildered B.U. goalie--before the quarter ended.

The Crimson amassed eleven goals before Steve Rudis broke goalie Rich "The Wall" Reid's shutout in the middle of the second quarter. Undeterred, the aquamen held a 12-1 halftime lead and increased the margin to 20-3 by the end of the third frame on the strength of Houston Hall's hat trick and two goals from Phil Atkinson.

Moment of Silence

In a quarter characterized by numerous penalties against the visitors, Harvard slackened its pace and allowed B.U. to score three goals in the finxl four minutes off of substitute goalie Chirs Trachas. However, Roberts notched four four goals in the final quarter, helping the aquamen punctuate the victory.

"I wanted to see the team execute properly, and for the most part I am happy with what I saw," Pike said after the game. "Tonight we played water polo the way it should be played," he added.

Heaven Sent

Frequent substitutions permitted nearly everyone on the Harvard side to see substantial action. Rick Raushenbush and Bob Tyler both performed well coming off the bench. Raushenbush had three steals, a goal and an assist, while Tyler assisted on two scoring plays.

The team will face its biggest test yet against Ivy League competition Saturday when the squad travels to New Haven to play Brown, ranked number one in New England, and Yale, ranked third.
