Swimmers Win Big Harvard Trounces Penn, 70-41

Flight delays kept Crimson coach Joe Bernal from ever reaching Philadelphia in time for Saturday's dual swim meet against Pennsylvania; but his coaching mastery was hardly required as the Crimson drowned perennial Ivy doormat Penn, 70-41, running its season dual meet record to 12-0.

Harvard snared victories in the meet's first seven events to roll up a 43-17 lead; and it clinched the meet in the tenth event, when sophomore Campari Knoepffler laid the Quakers to rest with a victory in the 500-yd. freestyle.

The Crimson's medley relay team of co-captain Malcolm Cooper, Tom Royal, Julian Mack and Jeff Seelen racked up the first points; and when freshman Tim Maximoff turned in a winning finish in the 1000-yd. freestyle, Harvard led 13-3.

Knockout Power

The aquamen unleashed a powerful freshman 1-2 punch in the meet's fourth and fifth events, Ron Raikula winning the 50-yd. freestyle, and Lee Menichella zipping to victory in the 200-yd. Individual Medley.

With divers Steve Schramm and Jamie Greacen leaping for exhibition only, junior Peter St. Louis seized his grand opportunity Saturday and easily destroyed Penn in both the one- and three-meter diving events, racking up lifetime-best totals of 226.65 and 224.3 points, respectively.

Aside from St. Louis and Knoepffler, a crew of freshmen closed out the Crimson victory, led by Jack Gauthier's 1:57.8 in the 200-yd. butterfly; Maximoff's fine 2:02.0 victory in the 200-yd. backstroke; and Tom Royal's hairbreadth victory in the 200-yd. breastroke, in a 2:16.0 clocking.

CRIMSON SPLASHES: Seven Crimson swimmers entered new events against Pennsylvania; and five qualified for the Easterns, including Cooper in the 100-yd. backstroke, Knoepffler in the 500-yd., freestyle and 200-yd. individual medley, Raikula in the 200-yd. freestyle, Gauthier in the 200-yd. butterfly and 50-yd. freestyle, and Menichella in the 200-yd. Individual Medley.
