NEW YORK-Police yesterday apparently accepted a contract offer by the city, ending rally demonstrations that had closed down some streets. The average policeman's pay jumped to $22,500.

The police union said in an official statement that the contract was the best possible deal it could have made, but that it was the best deal it could get from the city at the present time.
