B&G Fights Record Snowfall; Students Help to Clear Drifts

While the rest of the University has been throwing, eating and sculpting the newly-fallen snow, a small army of Buildings and Grounds (B&G) personnel has been struggling to clear it away.

Joseph C. Wright, supervisor of central operations and director of snow removal operations, said yesterday B&G was working with a force of 80 men and 20 pieces of heavy snow removal equipment.

"Not all of the men can get in from their homes, but I have nothing but praise for the men that are here--a lot of them have been working since Monday without any sleep," Wright said.

Closed Campus

Wright said garbage removal services have been hampered by the lack of men and the inability of removal trucks to get, near the campus.

Large bags of garbage are being stored in the basements of many dorms and outside the Union. "All we can do for now is hold some of it outside the buildings," Wright said.

Wright said approximately 50 students were taken on at $3.90 an hour to assist in snow removal operations. "No machine can clear all the steps around Harvard. The students did a fantastic job," he said, adding that yesterday's resumption of classes has slowed removal operations considerably.

"The problem now is hauling the snow away and then finding a place to put it," Wright said yesterday.

J. Lawrence Joyce, director of B&G, said yesterday snow removal costs would be "significant," but declined to provide figures.
