Yanks Sign Tiant

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Luis Tiant, former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, signed a two-year contract with the New York Yankees yesterday.

Tiant, 38, entered the free-agent draft when the Red Sox management refused to offer him anything more than a one-year contract, because of his age. The herky-jerky motioned pitcher was not selected until the eighth round and by only one team--the Yanks.

Last season, Tiant compiled a 13-8 record with a 3.31 earned run average. He had been with the Boston club since 1971, when they picked him up as a free agent after the Minnesota Twins released him.
