Dr. Mitchell W. Spellman will become the first Dean for Medical Services at the Harvard Medical School on Jan. 1, 1978, a spokesman for the Medical School said yesterday.

Spellman will serve as executive vice president of the Harvard Medical Center and help to coordinate graduate medical education programs at Harvard's teaching hospitals and centers. He will also represent the Faculty of Medicine in the development of health policy initiatives.

Spellman, who is currently dean of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School in Los Angeles, was unavailable for comment yesterday.
