Tennis: It's Thal in a nutshell

By Bill Scheft

If by chance you can pry yourself away from the football stadium this fall, a stroll down to the Soldiers Field tennis courts to watch the Radcliffe tennis team play will be well worth it.

With six of the top seven players returning from last spring's 11-3 squad, the racquet-women are not to be lobbed over easily. Captain-elect Denise Thal returns to assume the number one post she so deftly held last spring, and super soph Sally Roberts should again hold down the second slot.

The loss of last year's captain Lissa Muscatine, Radcliffe's answer to Babe Didrickson, is the only real problem that the team faces right now. Rita Funaro, Diana Olney, Kathy Fulton, and Andy Okamura should fill out the final four spots in style, as all saw varsity action last spring.

The J.V. squad from last spring should also provide needed depth to bolster the core of returning lettermen. Among those who should don varsity togs this fall are Ann Koufman, Sheila Butler, and Terry Clarke.

Corey Wynn, who served as interim coach of the team last spring because of the hasty retirement-dismissal of John McCarthy, was formally named head coach of the team in June by athletic director Robert B. Watson '37.

In making the appointment, Watson noted, "We are most fortunate to have such an outstanding person and teacher as Corey to place in command of the women's program." Wynn was extremely popular with the racquetwomen last spring and his easy-going style shouldn't breed the kind of problems that the team experienced with McCarthy last season.

This fall's schedule looks to be considerably less trying than the one in the spring, so, clay or composition, indoor or outdoor, Radcliffe's racquets should dominate all fall.
