The varsity tennis team completed its fantastic rise to the league title over the weekend, blanking Cornell on Friday, 9-0, and plastering Army on Saturday, 8-1.
The racquetmen finished tied for the Eastern title with Princeton, upset victims of the Crimson last week. A 7-2 loss to Columbia stands as the only flaw on the Harvard slate.
In the two weekend matches, Jack Barnaby's charges won all but one contest. Gary Reiner's loss at number one against Army. Harvard could afford the luxury of playing subs in most of the meaningless doubles matches, and they came through in fine form.
Barnaby, who will be retiring after this year, said yesterday that "the freshman played very well. I was very pleased."
Except for Reiner, all of the Crimson singles players, Todd Lundy, Danny Waldman, Kevin Shaw, Jim Levy, and Andy Chaikovsky, swept both of their opportunities.
A pleased Barnaby said yesterday, "We've completed a simply colossal achievement, considering that at the beginning of the year, we were just one of the numerous contenders for second place. We were certainly not to be considered a contender for first."
