Bob Shepley tallied twice in the third period last night, but the semi-pro Budweiser Kings hung on to defeat the Harvard junior varsity 5-3 at chilly Watson Rink.
Shepley's goal at 8:25 on a lead pass from Ken Farrish narrowed the King's lead to a seemingly surmountable 3-2. But the Budweiser-sponsored team bounced back with two quick scores to put the game out of reach. Shepley's second tally, a neat slap shot from twenty feet out, was inconsequential for the J.V.s. The loss puts the team's final record at 9-7.
Coach Bob Carr was calm after the loss. "We missed a lot of good opportunities, but I was pleased with several of the players, especially Shepley."
The Kings, half of whom are former Harvard players, dominated the game from the start, scoring twice in the first ten minutes. With an assist by two alumni, Jay Riley '73 and Gene Canassawitch '64, Jack Sullivan knocked in a loose puck at 5:35 to start off the Kings' scoring. Dave Morse' '62 followed three minutes later with a blazing shot 15 feet from the net. Former Harvard star Dave Hands '74 got the assist.
Harvard's play was uninspired in the first period, with poor passing and general confusion hampering the Crimson's efforts. They didn't get on the scoreboard until 14:56 in the first period, when Bill Nolen knocked in a good pass from Andy Spalding.
The brewery team led 2-1 after the first period.
Offense Gelled
Harvard's offense gelled in the second period, but three post shots in the middle of the period took some of the steam out of the attack. The Kings' defense tightened up and held the Crimson scoreless for the rest of the period, picking up a goal with a minute and a half left in the period to open up the game 3-1.
Shepley's first goal put the J.V.s back in the game at the start of third period action, but the defense fell apart, allowing two quick goals by Jeff Powers and Hands. Nolen and Moot picked up the assist on Shepley's second score, but by then the game was out of reach.
Shepley was subdued after the game. "I was glad to score in my last game for Harvard, but I wish the team had won. We beat the Kings in December 5-0.
Third Beer
"We were hampered by the fact that we were skating only three lines. Two of our players, Mike McDonald and Ken Dummitt couldn't play," Shepley snorted, as he downed his third post-game beer.
