Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey and treasurer John Harrington met with attorney Bob Woolf in Boston yesterday to iron out a contract between the club and right-hander Luis Tiant.
"We've reached a substantial agreement with the Red Sox," Woolf said after the three-hour session, and added that Tiant would probably join the rest of the team in Winter Haven, Fla., today. Details of the new agreement were relayed to General Manager Dick O'Connell, who was with the squad in Florida, for final approval.
The talks resulted from comments made by Tiant earlier this week, when he stated that he wouldn't pitch this year unless he got a raise and an extension on his contract. Tiant has been working out at Brookline High School.
