'Cliffe Five Win; Racquetwomen Lose

Dartmouth Hands First Squash Loss To Radcliffe Team

By Marc M. Sadowsky

The big 'Cliffe squash machine was derailed yesterday at Hanover, losing to a potent Dartmouth seven, 5-2. It was the racquetwomen's first loss in nine starts.

Playing on the cold Dartmouth courts, the only Radcliffe wins came at numbers three and four, where Sally Blair downed her opponent 3-0, and Emmi Levin bested her foe, 3-1.

"I think I played well, but she didn't, so I wasn't put on the defensive as in other matches," Sally Blair said last night.

Blair said she was determined to concentrate well during this match, because lack of concentration cost her a match against Wellesley Monday.

Emmi Levin, played a "fabulous" match, according to captain Susy Handy. In the third game, Levin was hit by her opponent's racquet. "I was mad, so I won the game," Levin said last night.

The match also marked Levin's first encounter with a lefty. It took a while to adjust to her sinistral foe, but by the end of the first game, Levin said, she had adjusted.

Handy attributed Blair and Levin's success to their consumption of egg salad sandwiches before the match.

The racquetwomen did not fare very well in the other matches, taking only one game in five matches. That honor belonged to Julia Moore, number two player, who lost 3-1.

At number one, captain Susy Handy lost 3-0, as did numbers five, six, and seven, Jane Hadsel, Liz Schafer, and Eve Caligor.

One 'Cliffe starter was missed because she had to attend her brother's wedding. Susanna deSola, who has not lost a match this season, left for her home in El Salvador.

Within the next five days, the racquetwomen will play four matches. Saturday, they'll face Yale at New Haven, and Monday they'll host Wesleyan at Heavenly Hemenway.
