Field Hockey Team Elects New Captain; Wood Views Leadership Role as Supportive

By Mark D. Director

Junior left link Lucy Wood will lead the Radcliffe field hockey team as captain for the 1977 season, replacing this year's captain, senior Ann Dupuis.

Wood said yesterday that her election pleased her because it indicated that her teammates considered her "a supportive person."

Wood said she has to "listen, get a sense of the team's working, and set an example," in her new role.

Wood is "a good team player with a lot of spirit and she will be a good leader," Dupuis said yesterday.

Wood said she would talk to Coach Debi Field about team strengths and weaknesses, adding that she has to "act as a representative of the team."

Although she has never been a captain before, Wood said that she "loves field hockey" and that her election "meant a great deal" to her.

"Lucy's got a lot of spirit," Dupuis said. "She was always thinking of crazy cheers and cheerleader dances." Everyone's team psyche was so good this year, Dupuis siad, "and Lucy will keep it that way."

Dupuis said Wood will face a major difference next year since the team will not go into games as the underdog. "Other teams only started to fear" this year's team late in the season, she said.

Next Year, Dupuis said, the team will enter games with a reputation to protect and "Lucy will have to keep spirit high, since we're not fighting our way up, but trying to stay up."

Wood said she wants to "keep the team unified. Everyone should be both friends and teammates; they were that way this year." She said that supporting players when they have school, personal or team problems would be "important to promote team unity."
