House Grill

A new South House grill offering music, entertainment and a game room will open in approximately two weeks, bringing the total number of House grills to eight.

The facility was constructed over the summer with approximately $20,000 of Committee on Housing and Undergraduate Life funds for improving Radcliffe, Emil Cornejo '78, South House committee representative, said Thursday.

Profits

The grill will turn over any profits to the House committee, Gilbert M. Feitas Jr. '79, said Thursday.

Several other House grills have a similar system, although Mark Forte '77, manager of the Leverett grill, said Thursday that the Leverett grill divides profits among the employees and the manager.

The new grill will be located opposite the entrance to Hilles Library in the basements of Briggs and Barnard Halls.

Several years ago South House had a grill in a bad location and "was not very attractive," Shirley Broner, South House secretary, said Thursday, adding that she had "high hopes" for the new grill.

Opening the South House grill is "a tremendous risk" and the new grill must be prepared to "hang on long enough to change people's habits," Anthony N. Vance '77, Currier House Committee president, said Thursday.

Currier House currently has the only grill at Radcliffe.

Atmosphere

"The atmosphere is totally different from Currier," Feitas said, adding, "I don't see anything wrong with competing with Currier."

Feitas said he is considering adding pinball machines but is afraid that it might "destroy the atmosphere." Pinball is a big source of revenue in other House grills, other grill managers said Thursday.

Archie C. Epps III, dean of students, said Thursday that he is in favor of house grills because they foster "smaller social units."
