MIT Tuition Rises

Tuition at the Massachusetts Institute of Techonology will increase $300 next year to $4000, Chancellor Paul E. Gray announced Wednesday.

Gray said that successive tuituion increased since the 1972-73 academic year have just compensated for inflation.

MIT ran a deficit of $5.2 million last year and expects a $3.4 million deficit this year, Gray said.

Gray said MIT hopes to reduce its deficit to $2 million next year by holding down pay raises, cutting some marginal programs, and increasing the number of students.

Tuition has increased 60 per cent since 1970-71.
