Crimson Netters Compete in Weekend Matches

Harvard Racquetmen Sweep Tourney

By Audrey H. Ingber

The Harvard tennis team travelled to Middlebury last weekend to sweep all three of the singles divisions of the New England Championships.

Competing against twenty-five to thirty schools, the Crimson squad also won the doubles match in two of the three divisions.

Junior Gary Reiner defeated number one man from Amherst. John Bates, to capture first place in the A division. Todd Lundy lost during the second round and was eliminated from the tournament.

Harvard vs. Harvard

In the other two competitions, both Harvard entries made it to the finals where John Horn defeated captain John Ingard to win the B division prize, and High Hyde downed Danny Waldman for first place in the C division.

In the doubles competition Ingard and Horn swept the A division and Hyde and Lundy took the first place in the third grouping.

In the B division, Gary Reiner and Chip Beard fought their way to the finals, but then dropped a close match, losing the third set. 7-5.

In the singles tournament two players from each team enter each division and keep playing until they lose a match. Each school also enters one pair in each section of the doubles competition.

Every time a player or doubles team wins a match, their school receives one point. Since six rounds make up each division, a school must win six points to win the division.

Dartmouth came in second overall for the weekend, but because Harvard swept five of the six sections, the Big Green never came close to toppling Harvard's number one position.

Reiner said after the meet. "New England competition isn't very tough. Our big match is coming up on Friday when we play Princeton."

If the Crimson racquetmen defeat Princeton this weekend, they will tie Princeton for first place in the Ivy League, having lost one match to Columbia. They have four more matches before the close of this season.

The freshmen tennis team demolished MIT last Saturday, 8-1. The freshmen racquetmen walked off with all the singles matches, while the first doubles lost a close match in its third set.

Handy Defeat

Captain of the team in the number one slot. Art Scherer, had more trouble than the other winners, still handily defeating his opponent, 6-1, 6-4. Number two man Karl Bostic downed his competition, 6-2, 6-0.

Saturday's victory broke the three-game losing streak that had plagued the Yardling racquetmen, who fell to Exeter, Lawrenceville, and Williams.

The victory put the freshmen in the winning column, boosting their record to four wins and three losses.

The frosh netmen will play their last home match of the season next Wednesday against Amherst.

A week later, they will conclude the year on Dartmouth's courts.
