SAILING: The Harvard sailing team elected CHRIS HORNIG and KEVIN GAUGHAN co-captains this week. The defending national champion Crimson sailors have already taken on the top teams on the east coast in two regattas during the past two weekends. March 29-30 at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, the unpracticed squad finished eighth out of 12 with Tim Black skippering in A Division and Tony Leggett skippering in B. Powerhouse Tufts won the event.

Last weekend in Philadelphia, Harvard won the Eastern Old Guard Championships, a major intersectional event with five Mid-Atlantic and seven New England schools competing. Leggett took second place in the A Division while Black took first in B as well as overall honors for low point skipper in the meet. Penn was second in the regatta, followed by Tufts, Yale and Coast Guard in the top five.

SWIMMING: HESS YNTEMA was the only Crimson point scorer in the recent NCAA swimming championships held in Cleveland. Yntema took a fifth in the 200m, fly.

BASEBALL: Penn has taken an early lead in the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League (EIBL) with a 3-0 record. The Quakers have defeated Brown twice, 8-0 and 4-1, and Yale by a 5-0 margin. Brown is currently winless with a 0-3 slate, the Elis are 2-1. Yale's JIM NEIL was named EIBL player of the week as he went six-for-six in a twin bill against Columbia last weekend. The Eli junior started at shortstop both games and pitched three innings of relief in the first game, yielding one run and striking out five, to pick up the victory. The two victories doubled Yale's 1974 EIBL total.

Today's EIBL schedule had Navy at Brown, Princeton at Yale, Dartmouth at Columbia and Penn here on Soldiers Field at 3 p.m. Because of the unseasonable weather in Hanover, the Big Green will play its home game with Columbia on the Lion's New York field and will also host Penn in the Big Apple on Saturday for a doubleheader.

Former Harvard baseball star PETE VARNEY '71 will be sharing the catching duties for the Chicago White Sox with Steve Downing this season. The Chisox traded top catcher Ed Hermann this spring giving the former Crimson slugger a regular shot at the big leagues. Dartmouth's former ace PETE BROBERG pitched 6 1/3 innings against the Red Sox Wednesday as he and his Milwaukee Brewer teammates earned a 7-4 win over Boston Broberg figures to be a regular in the Brewers starting rotation.

TENNIS: In Eastern league tennis, Columbia and Penn both have started out with two wins in the first tow matches. Columbia, which won the Eastern title in 1972 and 1973, dumped Brown 8-1 and Yale 9-0 while the Quakers swept the Elis and Bruins by 8-1 margins. None of te other eastern teams have started the season but today Columbia is at Dartmouth, Navy at Brown, Princeton at Yale and Penn here at the Palmer Dixon courts. The match begins at 2 p.m.

GOLF: The Crimson golf squad had its first two matches of the season cancelled this week due to the weather, but hopes to swing into action this Monday at Amherst.

TRACK: The track team takes on rival Northeastern Saturday at Soldiers Field. The thinclads, coming off a loss to Baptist College April 5, will be looking to avenge winter losses to the Huskies.
