John S. Harwell, associate director of admissions and financial aid, is the front-runner in the search for a new director of the Student Employment Office, administration sources said yesterday.
Harwell, who is also senior tutor of Mather House, said yesterday he would accept the position if offered it. But he added that he does not have the job "locked up."
The final choice for a new SEO director will probably be made the week of April 20, L. Fred Jewett "57, director of Admissions and Financial aid, said yesterday. Jewett, who would not say whether Harwell was the prime candidate, will choose the new director.
Harwell would replace Bradley T. Howe '63, who is leaving the SEO to become director of Alumni Activities at the Business School.
Jewett declined to name other candidates but said that Harwell is the only Person currently working at Harvard who is now being considered for the SEO directorship.
Howe said yesterday it is "fair to say" Harwell is the leading candidate for the SEO job. He added that there are several other "strong" candidates under consideration.
Harwell said yesterday his seven years' experience in admissions and financial aid would provice the necessary background for the SEO directorship.
Harwell will remain as senior tutor of Mather House next academic year
