Harvard Volleyballers Overcome Springfield In East Quarter-Finals

An ailing Harvard volleyball team bounced back from two consecutive league losses to a strong Springfield squad with a 2-1 victory over the Chiefs in the quarter finals of the Eastern Volleyball Tournament Saturday in New York.

Peter Haviland, playing with a broken to, and Peter Graham, who returned to Stillman infirmary after the match, led the team to its 15-12, 10-15, 15-9 triumph over Springfield.

"Considering that physically we were far below par, we played much better than we expected," Mike Palm, coach of the team said yesterday.

The team posted a 5-2 tally in the round robin before entering the quarter-final events.

The six-man team of Haviland, Graham, captain Steve Kay, Wolfe Gutscher, Joe Antunucci, Joe Shlegeris, and alternate Eric Baum will face New Paltz next Saturday at the IAB.
