Northeastern Huskies Outskate Eagles in Beanpot Consolation

For the Northeasters hockey squad, a win in the Beanpot tournament is not a common occurance. So last night's victory over a hard luck Boston College squad, 5-3 took on added significance even if it was simply a lowly consolation round contest.

The Huntington Hounds have won just he games in the 23-years history of Boston's beloved tournament. Northeastern has visited the finals only twice and has come up empty-handed each time. Last night's win in Boston Garden was the sixth third place finish for the Huskies, a squad that has lost 38 Beanpot contests.

For a while, it looked as if Northeastern was headed for its 38th defeat, as the Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. But the Hounds did not play dead and with the help of Even McPhedran aad Joe Fidler. Northeastern stormed back for the victory.

McPhedram scored the tying goal, while Fidler tallied the game winner at 5-57 of the third period Dave Sherlock one of the Huskie's top scoters with less than a minute remaining put the into an empty net for the final margin.

Northeastern also picked up goals from Mike Holmes aad Bob Haldane, while B.C. rehed mostly on the offensive efforts of Mike Martin. Martin tallied a pair in the contest, while teammate Marks Riley added a third.

Northeastern was banished one again from the finals by Harvard last Monday night by a whopping 9-0 margin Overall the Huskies have now allowed 276 goals in the tourney, while they have scored only 140.

For coach Ferny Flaman, who was hoping that this year the Huskies would have some bite, Once again it's wait until next year.
