The Harvard soccer team has been hurting of late. The footmen have dropped four of their last five outings, and the hopes of a repeat Cinderella season have pretty well gone by the board.
Although Coach George Ford's primary pre-season question mark, concerning a strong starting goal tender, has been answered by Fred Herold, the scoring responsibilities have fallen solely on the foot of striker Dave Acorn, with little help from the rest of the offensive corps.
Ghoulies and Ghosties
Tonight however the Crimson will have the chance to exploit the Halloween spirit, and pull off a little rising from the dead action, as the footmen start the home stretch of their Ivy League campaign in a key encounter with Penn at the Quakers' Franklin Field.
If Harvard could notch a victory tonight visions of a piece of the league title could revive an otherwise lackluster season.
The boys from Philly are not the fleet-footed folks of a few years ago. Penn has already dropped two Ivy contests, getting shellacked by Brown 4-0 and then losing to Dartmouth in an overtime affair.
Last week however a touch of Irish graced the Quakers as freshman forward Sean O'Donnell tallied two against the Tigers to give Penn its first league win.
The Harvard team is keying heavily on the Penn game as a pivotal point in the season. "If we can beat Penn it would put us right in the middle of the league race and really save our season," said senior midfieldman Doug Stone.
The Crimson is now in third place behind unbeaten Brown and Cornell. Those two teams will be going at it next week in a key showdown that could open a track for Harvard to sneak into the running.
The Bruins are sporting an attack which averages four goal per game and which has yet to yield a goal in league play. The Big Red has its feet full.
In league states the Crimson's Acorn is tied for the second leading scorer slot, having pumped in four goals in three outings. Goalie Fred Herold has also impressed, yielding only five goals and coming up with fifteen saves.
The game will kick-off under the lights at 8:30 p.m., and the Crimson should be able to rally some tricks or treats for the unsuspecting host squad.
