The Big Green football invasion, phase one, successfully completed maneuvers yesterday at the Soldiers' Field sports complex. Dartmouth's freshman aerial attack bombarded host Harvard enroute to a 21-7 triumph, while the junior varsity gridiron contingent from Hanover ran rampant for a 28-13 victory over its Crimson counterparts.
Dartmouth's freshman team capitalized on an early Harvard fumble to grab a 7-0 lead. The Crimson bobble came on the second play of the game, and gave the Green possession on the Harvard 20 yardline. Dartmouth didn't waste any time, scoring two plays later on a six-yard burst by quarterback Buddy Teevens.
Teevens, who clicked on eight of ten passes for 150 yards, boosted the Dartmouth edge to 14-0 midway through the first quarter. The compact chucker hooked up with split end Scott Brewster for a 15-yd. touchdown toss. Steve St. Clair then added the second of three extrapoints he was to garner during the afternoon.
Dartmouth continued its passing assault in the second stanza. QB Teevens connected with wide receiver Jim Marcella for 47 yards. The Green gainer set up a four yard TD flicker to halfback Jim Eden for a commanding 21-0 Dartmouth bulge at intermission.
Harvard's revamped defense slammed the door on Dartmouth in the second half, but the damage had already been done. Meanwhile, the mistakes mounted on the offensive side of the Crimson ledger Ten penalties, three fumbles, and two interceptions were more than enough to sidetrack the Harvard offense.
Under the direction of quarterback Mike Kelly, Harvard moved the pigskin effectively but constantly coughed it up in crucial situations. Kelly, a second quarter replacement for starter John Daly, hit on six of 11 passing attempts for 70 yards.
QB Kelly's favorite target, running back Ralph Polillio, scored the lone Crimson touchdown with four minutes remaining in the contest.
In the other clash, Dartmouth's junior varsity drove 65 yards on its initial possession for the first period's only scoring. Aided by a 33--yard pass-interference call against Harvard, Dartmouth tallied on a 12-yard jaunt by Frank Wilson.
John McCarthy salvaged a 7-7 halftime tie for the Crimson late in the second quarter. McCarthy intercepted a Dartmouth pass in the flat, picked up several key blockers, and coasted in on the wave of a scintallating 65-yard touchdown return of the errant toss.
Dartmouth broke it open in the third quarter for a 21-7 lead. Jimmy Solomon's five yard sweep for paydirt preceeded a 30 yard gallop to the goalline by Sam Coffey.
Harvard put a scare into the Green machine with a marvelously engineered fourth quarter drive. John Tuke pulled Harvard to within striking distance (21-13), by capping the sustained thrust with a seven-yard run.
