Ford Will Appear At Boston Club Instead of at Burr

Vice President Gerald R. Ford yesterday cancelled a Harvard appearance scheduled for March 11.

Ford will receive the Harvard Republican Club's "Man of the Year" award at the Harvard Club in downtown Boston instead of coming to Cambridge.

The schedule for Ford's visit, which includes a speech at the Sheraton Hotel in Boston, does not allow time for a detour to Cambridge, Richard N. Smith '75, program director for the Republican Club, said yesterday. For that reason, the visit was shifted to the Harvard Club which is near the Sheraton, Smith said.

He added that his conversations with members of Ford's staff persuaded him that the appearance was not cancelled for security reasons. "Ford's aides sounded sincere in wanting the visit on campus," he said.

At least one group at Harvard, the New American Movement (NAM), announced that they still plan to organize demonstrations against Ford.

Neither Ford's office nor the Secret Service could be reached for comment yesterday.
